The Mystery Hid From Ages

Christ, the Church, and the Revelation God Kept Secret

Introduction

Colossians 1:26 is one of the great right-division verses in the New Testament. Paul writes of “the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints.” That verse is not difficult because God wrote it unclearly. It becomes difficult when men refuse to believe what it says. The mystery was hidden. It was hidden from ages. It was hidden from generations. But now it is made manifest. That means there is truth in Paul’s ministry that was not plainly revealed in Moses, David, Isaiah, Daniel, Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. It was not preached openly by the prophets since the world began. It was hidden until God revealed it in due time.

Modern religion has almost no patience for hidden-and-now-revealed truth. It wants every doctrine to be the same from Genesis to Revelation. It wants Peter, Paul, Moses, James, John the Baptist, and the tribulation saints all preaching the same message under the same conditions to the same people in the same program. That may sound simple, but it is not Bible. It is a denominational blender. Romans 16:25 speaks of “the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,” while Acts 3:21 speaks of things “which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” Those two statements are not the same. One was spoken. One was kept secret. One is prophecy. One is mystery.

The mystery hid from ages is not a threat to the rest of the Bible. It is the glory of God’s wisdom revealed in its proper time. God did not fail to tell the prophets something by accident. He hid the mystery on purpose. First Corinthians 2:8 says if the princes of this world had known God’s hidden wisdom, “they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” God’s wisdom was beyond Satan’s calculation, beyond Israel’s expectation, beyond Gentile religion, and beyond the imagination of men. Through the cross, God not only provided redemption; He later revealed that He would form a new Body, made up of saved Jews and Gentiles, seated in Christ, complete in Christ, and joined to a risen Head in heaven. That is not religious fog. That is Pauline revelation.

I. The Mystery Was Hidden by God, Not Lost by Men

Colossians 1:26 says the mystery “hath been hid from ages and from generations.” That means the mystery was not merely overlooked by careless readers. It was hidden by God. Ephesians 3:9 says it was “hid in God.” That is an important phrase. It was not hidden in Old Testament prophecies waiting for a clever scholar to find it. It was hidden in God Himself until He chose to reveal it. That is why Paul calls it a revelation, not a discovery.

Romans 16:25 says this mystery was “kept secret since the world began.” If words mean anything, that means the mystery was not being openly preached from the beginning. Adam did not know it. Noah did not know it. Abraham did not know it in its revealed form. Moses did not administer it. David did not build the Church which is Christ’s Body. Isaiah did not preach Jew and Gentile baptized by one Spirit into one Body seated in heavenly places in Christ. The prophets spoke glorious things, but Paul says this truth was kept secret.

Deuteronomy 29:29 says, “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us.” God has the right to conceal truth until His appointed time. The Bible is progressive revelation. God’s character does not change, but God reveals His program in stages. The mystery was not lost, suppressed, or forgotten. It was hidden in God until the risen Christ revealed it through Paul.

The mystery was hidden by God Himself and could not be known until God chose to reveal it.

II. The Mystery Is Now Made Manifest to the Saints

The mystery did not remain hidden forever. Colossians 1:26 says it is “now made manifest to his saints.” The word “now” matters. Paul is dealing with a present revelation that had not been made known in former generations. Ephesians 3:5 says the mystery “in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed.” That does not mean the prophets were unintelligent. It means God had not yet revealed this truth.

Romans 16:26 says the mystery “now is made manifest.” That repeated “now” shows a dispensational shift. God is making known something in Paul’s ministry that was not previously revealed. The Church is not left to guess what the mystery is. Paul explains it in Colossians and Ephesians. It concerns Christ in the believer, the Body of Christ, Jew and Gentile made one in Christ, the dispensation of grace, and the believer’s position in a risen Saviour.

This manifestation is given to the saints, not to the world’s philosophers, religious experts, or natural men. The lost man can read words on a page, but without spiritual understanding he will not receive the things of the Spirit of God. The mystery is not understood by pride, tradition, denominational loyalty, or scholarship that corrects the Book. It is understood by believers who receive what God revealed through His apostle.

The mystery once hidden is now made manifest to the saints through the revelation given by God.

III. The Mystery Reveals Christ in You, the Hope of Glory

Colossians 1:27 identifies one glorious part of the mystery: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” That is not Old Testament kingdom language. That is Church-age union truth. The believer is not merely following an external religious code. He is joined to Christ. Christ is in him. The saved man has a life that is not his own life improved, but Christ’s life in him. Galatians 2:20 says, “Christ liveth in me.” That is not motivational language. That is doctrine.

The hope of glory is not found in the believer’s flesh, performance, feelings, background, denomination, or religious consistency. It is Christ in him. Colossians 3:3–4 says, “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Then Paul says, “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” The believer’s future glory rests in Christ Himself. Christ is not merely the object of the believer’s admiration; He is the believer’s life.

This truth destroys both religious pride and spiritual despair. It destroys pride because the believer has nothing to boast in but Christ. It destroys despair because the believer’s hope does not depend on the strength of his flesh. The mystery reveals that God has placed the believer in Christ and Christ in the believer. That is deeper than religion, stronger than law, and more glorious than human merit.

The mystery reveals Christ in the believer as the sure hope of glory.

IV. The Mystery Reveals the Church Which Is Christ’s Body

The mystery includes the revelation of the Church which is Christ’s Body. Ephesians 1:22–23 says God gave Christ “to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body.” That is not Israel under a new name. It is not a denomination. It is not a building. It is a living spiritual organism joined to a risen Head in heaven. Colossians 1:18 says Christ “is the head of the body, the church.”

First Corinthians 12:13 explains how believers enter this Body: “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.” That baptism is not water baptism. It is the Spirit’s operation placing the believer into Christ. It is not performed by a preacher, priest, or denomination. It is performed by the Holy Ghost. The Body of Christ is not formed by human membership rolls but by the Spirit placing saved sinners into Christ.

Ephesians 4:4 says, “There is one body.” In this present dispensation, God is not forming multiple competing spiritual bodies. He is forming one Body under one Head. This truth was not revealed in the Old Testament prophetic program. Israel had a nation, a land, a priesthood, a temple, a throne, and covenants. The Church has a Head in heaven and is His Body. Right division protects both Israel’s calling and the Church’s mystery identity.

The mystery reveals the Church as the one Body of Christ, joined to a risen Head in heaven.

V. The Mystery Reveals Jew and Gentile in One New Man

Ephesians 3:6 says Gentiles are “fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel.” That is mystery truth. In time past, Gentiles were “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel” and “strangers from the covenants of promise.” But now, in Christ, saved Jews and saved Gentiles are placed into the same Body. They are not two covenant classes inside the Church. They are one in Christ.

Ephesians 2:15 says Christ made “in himself of twain one new man.” That one new man is not Israel improved, Gentiles Judaized, or a religious institution taking over Israel’s promises. It is a new creation in Christ. The “twain” are Jew and Gentile. God did not simply make Gentiles spiritual Jews. He made believing Jews and Gentiles one new man in Christ. That is why the Church must not be confused with Israel or the Gentile nations.

First Corinthians 10:32 still names three groups: Jews, Gentiles, and the Church of God. A man may be born a Jew or a Gentile, but when he is saved in this dispensation, he becomes part of the Church of God, the Body of Christ. That does not cancel Israel’s future national promises, but it does explain the believer’s present position. The mystery reveals unity in Christ without stealing Israel’s prophetic identity.

The mystery reveals saved Jews and Gentiles made one new man in Christ without erasing Israel’s future or the Church’s distinct calling.

VI. The Mystery Was Revealed Through Paul’s Ministry

Colossians 1:25 says Paul was made a minister “according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God.” Ephesians 3:2 says Paul was given “the dispensation of the grace of God.” Ephesians 3:3 says, “How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery.” The mystery is tied directly to Paul’s ministry. That is not Paul exalting himself. That is the Holy Ghost explaining God’s order.

Galatians 1:11–12 says Paul’s gospel was not after man and was not received from man, but “by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Paul did not invent the mystery. He did not borrow it from the twelve. He did not develop it through religious education. The risen Christ revealed it to him. Romans 11:13 identifies Paul as “the apostle of the Gentiles.” The Church must consider what Paul says if it wants understanding for this dispensation.

This is where much confusion begins. Men want Paul’s verses for comfort but not Paul’s authority for doctrine. They quote Romans 8 but ignore Romans 16:25. They quote Ephesians 2:8–9 but reject Ephesians 3. They enjoy Colossians 2:10 but will not believe Colossians 1:26. A man cannot properly understand the Church while rejecting the apostle through whom Christ revealed Church doctrine.

VII. The Mystery Must Be Distinguished From Prophecy

Romans 16:25 says the mystery was “kept secret since the world began.” Acts 3:21 speaks of things “which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” Those are opposite statements. Prophecy was spoken since the world began. Mystery was kept secret since the world began. If the Bible student misses that distinction, he will force the Church into Israel’s prophetic program and spend the rest of his life untangling knots he tied himself.

Prophecy concerns Israel, the covenants, the land, the kingdom, the throne of David, the day of the Lord, the restoration of Israel, and Messiah’s reign on earth. Luke 1:70 says God spoke by His holy prophets “which have been since the world began.” The prophets preached many glorious truths concerning Christ, Israel, and the kingdom. But they did not reveal the Body of Christ as Paul later revealed it.

The mystery concerns truth hidden in God until now made manifest. It concerns the Body of Christ, the dispensation of grace, Jew and Gentile in one new man, Christ in the believer, and the Church’s heavenly calling. Prophecy and mystery both glorify Christ, but they do not reveal the same program. Right division does not diminish Scripture. It keeps God’s revelations in their proper places.

Main Truth:
The mystery must be distinguished from prophecy because one was kept secret while the other was spoken by the prophets.

VIII. The Mystery Protects the Gospel of Grace From Religious Mixture

Colossians 2:10 says, “And ye are complete in him.” That truth is connected to the believer’s position in Christ and the mystery revelation. The believer is not complete in Moses, ordinances, sacraments, priestcraft, church membership, religious tradition, or personal performance. He is complete in Christ. The mystery protects the gospel of grace because it reveals the believer’s sufficiency in a risen Head, not in an earthly system.

Ephesians 2:8–9 says salvation is by grace through faith, not of works. Romans 6:14 says the believer is not under the law but under grace. Acts 20:24 calls Paul’s message “the gospel of the grace of God.” When the mystery is ignored, men drag the believer back into law, ordinances, kingdom conditions, tribulation endurance, and religious probation. They say Christ saves, but then add systems to keep the sinner dependent on man.

Galatians 1:8–9 pronounces a curse on any man or angel who preaches another gospel. That is serious ground. Paul did not tolerate gospel corruption. A grace message mixed with works is not improved grace. It is corrupted grace. The mystery reveals a complete Christ, a complete salvation, a complete standing, and a complete Body. Religion always wants to add something. The mystery points to Christ and says the believer is complete in Him.

The mystery protects the gospel of grace by grounding the believer’s salvation and standing in complete union with Christ.

IX. The Mystery Displays the Riches of God’s Glory

Colossians 1:27 says God would make known “what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles.” The mystery is not a dry academic topic. It is rich with glory. God took guilty sinners, both Jews and Gentiles, saved them by grace, placed them into one Body, seated them in Christ, and made them partakers of a heavenly calling. That displays riches no earthly religion could invent.

Ephesians 2:7 says that in the ages to come God will shew “the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” The Body of Christ is a trophy of grace. Every saved sinner in this dispensation is evidence that God’s grace is greater than sin, greater than religion, greater than Gentile darkness, greater than Jewish unbelief, and greater than Satan’s schemes. The mystery displays God’s wisdom in a way principalities and powers could not have anticipated.

Ephesians 3:10 says God’s intent is that “unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.” That is staggering. The Church is not an accident. The Body of Christ is part of God’s eternal purpose in Christ Jesus. The mystery magnifies Christ before heaven and earth. It shows that the cross was not Satan’s victory but God’s wisdom. It reveals Christ as Head, Saviour, life, glory, and all in all.

Main Truth:
The mystery displays the riches of God’s glory and the manifold wisdom of God through the Body of Christ.

Conclusion

The mystery hid from ages is one of the great truths of Pauline revelation. It was hidden in God, not merely overlooked by men. It was kept secret since the world began, but now it is made manifest to the saints. It reveals Christ in the believer, the hope of glory. It reveals the Church which is Christ’s Body. It reveals Jew and Gentile in one new man. It reveals the dispensation of grace and the believer’s heavenly calling. It reveals God’s wisdom in a way the prophets did not preach openly and Satan did not understand.

The Church has suffered tremendous confusion because men have ignored this mystery. They have mixed Israel and the Church, prophecy and mystery, law and grace, kingdom truth and Body truth, Peter’s commission and Paul’s revelation. The result is a Christianity full of uncertainty, legalism, replacement theology, prophetic confusion, sacramental bondage, and gospel fog. But God did not leave the Church without doctrine. He gave Paul the revelation of the mystery so the saints could be established in truth.

The answer is not to throw away the rest of the Bible. God forbid. All Scripture is profitable. The answer is to rightly divide the word of truth. Let prophecy stand where God placed it. Let mystery stand where God revealed it. Let Israel keep her covenants and promises. Let the Church keep her heavenly calling in Christ. Let Paul’s gospel remain clear. Let Christ be preached according to the revelation of the mystery. The Bible becomes a book of order when the workman stops mixing what God separated.

Final Call

The sinner does not need a hidden code or religious ceremony. He needs the Lord Jesus Christ. The mystery reveals the riches of Christ, but the gospel is plain: Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, He was buried, and He rose again the third day according to the scriptures. Salvation today is by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Do not trust religion. Do not trust your works. Do not trust your baptism. Do not trust your feelings. Do not trust a church system. Trust Christ. He died for the guilty. He rose for the justification of those who believe. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

Believer, do not live like a spiritual pauper when God has made you complete in Christ. Study the mystery. Learn Paul’s doctrine. Rejoice in Christ in you, the hope of glory. Stand in the gospel of grace. Rightly divide the Book. Let the revelation once hid from ages establish your faith and magnify your Saviour.
